Partitioning for dummies



Getting a new PC is always a joyous event. Most of the time you get system ready to be put to work (or game), but sometimes you need to do the hard work of installing components, formatting the drive and setting up the operating system. When it's time to do that you need a certain technical prowess, but most of the time computers already come with a pre-installed operating system. The hard drive is already partitioned and formatted ,so there's no need for you to worry about that. Still what if you want to create a new partition? What if you want to install a Linux distribution to share the same drive with your Windows OS?

MiniTool Partition Wizard Free is as versatile as its long name. Besides containing a lot of tools for managing and modifying disk partitions, it also features some wizards to easily guide you to completing certain tasks. The main window shows a list of all the disks with every partition. On the left bar you get links for all possible operations for the selected partition. Besides being found in the standard drop down menus, being contextually visible increases accessibility and also makes exploring options a bit easier.

There are basic functions that Partition Wizard can do. A partition can be moved/resized or extended over unallocated space. Partitions can be merged or split. The Align function makes sure that a partitions functions properly after having been created or altered. Of course it can also perform tasks like deleting, formatting or changing the file system. For example, you will need to format a partition to Ext3 in order to be able to install Ubuntu or other Linux distribution.

There are four wizards included. One helps you migrate your OS to another partition. Another lets you copy a partition while the third one allows you to copy the entire disk. Finally, there's the one that helps you recover partition changes that occurred in the past.

There are numerous other settings and ways edit partitions. Bare in mind that not every button is available though. Some are only available for the paid version and are placed as bait here.
